Time for yourself

How many of you reading this have all the time you need to get done everything you want to do? This is a question that I always ask as part of our Time Management training and I have yet to find anyone say that they have enough time. So how do you squeeze the quart into the pint pot and why is it that some people seem able to do so much in the time available?

The key answer to this is prioritisation, but how do you find the time to prioritise? It is a bit like saying ‘if I had the time, I would attend a good time management training course’. I love Stephen Covey’s wry comment here: ‘Ever been too busy driving to stop for fuel?’

One simple way to do this is to simply book in at least one hour a week (ideally 2 or 3) for you. Treat this just as you would any other meeting with an important person for who could be more important than you anyway? This means if you are in an office, shut your door or maybe just exit the building for an hour or so. What you do with this time is very important. You use it to focus on the important things that need to get done and (guess what?) prioritise them.

One of the reasons this probably does not happen already is that we fail to place sufficient value on our own time, yet in reality it is the most precious resource we have for unlike money which can be recovered, once you have lost time you can never get it back.
